Case Study - Limousine Business Tries to Hedge On Fuel Costs, Storage Strategy Backfires

Okay so, you are probably worried about the fuel costs for your family vehicles. I don’t blame you one bit, it adds up to quite a chunk of money as we are approaching or at four dollars per gallon. Worse, there is an uncertainty about a potential war with Iran which could shoot oil prices even higher, that means we will definitely be feeling the pain at the pump, even if the economic situation becomes so grave that President Obama decides to release some strategic oil reserves, which is ill advised, as it should only lower the price of gasoline perhaps $.03-$.05, which won’t really make a dent in your budget.

Still, if you think your fuel prices are high, imagine if you ran a transportation company or limousine company for instance. Last time we had really high oil prices one of our local limousine companies in the area had bought up 3500 gallons worth of gasoline and was storing it on his property, where he parked his limousines. Unfortunately, the local city didn’t like the idea that he was storing gasoline there, and when they found out, they confiscated it because he didn’t have all the right permits.

Surely, gasoline is flammable we all know that, and cities, counties, states, and the federal government do have rules for the storage of gasoline. But this was an above ground tank, and it featured all the fire hazard issues and he had a state permit. Well, this is a case study and overbearing regulatory environment that is killing our small businesses in this country.

In my personal and professional opinion I believe this to be pathetic, but I thought I would show this case study so that you might see how we are killing our small businesses and in the process; jobs in America. The small business person can’t win, and the government doesn’t care. And, unfortunately it’s getting worse.
