MLA Format for Essays

What is the MLA Format for Essays? The MLA format for essays is the standard research paper design and layout for a paper written in the Modern Language Association (MLA) format. The essay format consists of four areas: (1) font, (2) margins, (3) paragraphs and spacing, and (4) header. The font should be Times New Roman, size 12. The margins should be 1" on all sides. The paragraphs and spacing should be double-spaced and indentations for paragraphs should be half an inch (0.5 inches). The header of the MLA format for essays should have the student’s first and last name at the top left of the header, followed by the course name and number, professor’s name, and date the essay is due. The essay should also have the student’s last name and page number at the top right of the header on every page except the title page and Works Cited Page (or bibliography).

The MLA format for essays is intended to guide the student through the needed work to format an essay in the Modern Language Association format. Students of liberal arts and humanities disciplines, including cinematic studies, cultural studies, comparative literature, History, English, art history, languages, and other classes need to know this format. It will determine either the success of their academic career, or its failure.
